Blue Gold
Blue-Gold 2; 24 August 2021
Game 0
We changed the way we run a Blue-Gold Match a few years ago, so as to get a more competitive match. Who wants to watch the Varsity beat the JV 6-0?
We basically run 3 different matches within a format that uses 6 different 15-minute blocks of time to assess play. Three of those segments are evenly split teams between our Top 30 players. This match within the match ended up 1-0, with the only goal scored by Connor Murray on a nice throw-in set piece started by Mark Mason.
This was a very competitive match with our starting defense of Garcia, Mason, Muckerman and Weinrich turning away our vaunted offense many times. We are trying to find more of a direct assault on the baseline that produces opportunities such as corners, t-balls, etc. We still have a ways to go as we produced only a couple of corners all night—that's a fairly nice indicator of how seriously we are attacking that baseline.
Cooper Welsh, who has been getting a prolonged look at replacing the other Welch at the 6, had a very good match. He, Mason, or Muckerman were probably the BWhite Man(Men)-of-the-Match.
We did play the final 15-minute segment as a true Varsity vs. Junior Varsity. That piece did look like a true Blue-Gold scrimmage where the varsity is fairly dominant. And the lone goal was a beauty from our "10," Barrett Kitts, who found our wing, Matt Seibolt, on a nifty goal that started with a Kitts' pass out wide left, before Seibolt cut it in, into a nice bending right-footed shot to the back post. Coach Hammons has done a nice job of encouraging our wingers to switch periodically during the match. In fact, Swags and Matt had just switched moments before that nice goal.
On the JV side of things we got a nice shift we thought from Taborda and Laws.
The final match included two 15-minute blocks between our JV (minus any who participated in the Top 30 scrimmage) and our C-team.
That was a dang competitive match that ended up 1-1. Junior Charlie Heap overpower the C-team backline in the first 15 to give the JV the early 1-0. But freshman, Omar Sarmiento, got the late, tying goal with a nice poke from his "10" position.
That freshman class of ours is small (14) but mighty. There are plenty of future varsity players in that group. All 3 teams should have very nice seasons this fall. And we will probably see a few of those freshman get some JV minutes before the season is over.
We will watch our varsity and JV boys play as a team Friday evening as we launch the 2021 Soccer Season with Bandage Out, vs. St. James Academy. We look for a huge crowd and a fun evening for all.
Go Saints!
