KSHSAA Covered "3rd Place"
Third place
St. Thomas Aquinas 4, Valley Center 1Whatever Aquinas played for in Saturday's season finale, junior Anthony Consuegra was going to be ready.
Playing for the first time in 15 games since breaking a left pinky toe in a match against Blue Valley Northwest, Consuegra scored two goals and added an assist to help the Saints earn third place.
"I was doing it for our seniors," said Consuegra, who scored on a free kick in the 11th minute and from the right side in the 68th minute. "It means a lot. It's not what we hoped for, the game we were playing today, but I made the best of it."
Valley Center (13-7-1), which made its first final four appearance, answered Consuegra's first goal with a 30-yard laser shot from senior Cade Martin in the 33rd minute. But the Saints dominated possession in the second half, and pulled away with three goals in the final 12 minutes.
"We competed hard all weekend, and once we went down 2-1, it was just kind of a back breaker," Valley Center coach Matt Coleman said. "We were running on adrenaline at that point, and once we realized it, we were exhausted. But I couldn't ask for any more from them this weekend."
Aquinas (15-5-1) played without junior midfielder Barrett Kitts, who injured his knee in the semifinal loss to Maize South. But Consuegra, whose return was delayed by a concussion he sustained in an auto accident on the day of the Saints' regional opener, picked up some of the slack, feeding leading scorer Ethan Young for a header in the 74th that made it 3-1. Senior Joseph Vance added the final goal from close distance in the 78th.
"The third-place game is hard to play," Aquinas coach Craig Ewing said. "But I thought our kids played hard. We dominated play. And AC makes such a difference for our team. He's so dynamic."
