State Semis

Game 20: (14-5-1)
5 November vs. Maize South at 5:00 at Stryker in State Semis (1-2)

Well, we were pretty decent first half even though we were playing against the wind and the sun, and despite giving up a bad deadball goal. We statistically dominated the half, creating 6 corners, getting off 8 shots, and cashing a deadball goal of our own. Liam also hit a shot that caught all of the inside of the post before, somehow, not going in.

Second half, although the wind had died quite a bit, we did have what was left of it. Our stats, however, were way down as we only created 2 corners and only got off 4 shots. So, something changed dramatically in our approach. Maize South had increased  their defensive pressure.

We did have 2/3 incredible opportunities in the second half, though. We even scored on one of them. Our captain, Luke Konnesky, hit one heck of a volley into the far side corner of the net on a ball Kitts hit off the top of the crossbar, but the goal was ruled offsides as the ref judged that Ethan who was in an offsides position was affecting the play. Tough call, but probably correct. Check it out & some more.

Moments later, Kitts found Ethan on a quick counter where Ethan got passed the goalie but had his shot deflected out of bounds for a goal kick on just a great defensive play by the Mavs.

In fairness, the Mavs had two great opportunities as well when our defense broke down and they also beat Diggs. Mason saved the first one and the shot went wide on the other one.

So hats off to Maize South. Their size, fierce defensive pressure, and their ability to be dangerous on deadballs ended up being enough to upend us.

We were still all tied up with about seven minutes to go when we gave up the corner kick that created the game-winning goal. And it wasn't close. They had a perfect service for Wilson who just skied above everyone to head it in.

We did not bring our A-game tonight, and it was a shame as we had worked our tail off all season to get back to the State Finals, and we were a hair away. But Maize South was a much better team than we have seen from Wichita in a long time, and every bit as good as we were today.

We will be back with another very strong team next year, but those seniors will not. Those 12 guys had a great year for us, and I think all of us, coaches and their teammates wanted another title, mostly for them.

Hopefully, we will go out in style tomorrow against Valley Center.
